The Planter's Hotel is, according to the owner, one of the oldest hotels in Kandy. With the original hardwood flooring, doors and windows, huge staircaise, and grand marble floored lobby, this magnificent colonial style building has kept its charm from the past century. The hotel does need some (careful) renovation, no doubt, but if you don't mind that not everything is shiny and up-to-date and would like to experience the feeling of the colonial era you should check this one out. I mean, where can you find 20+ square meter hotel rooms today, with a ceiling height of around 4 meters? I hope more people will consider the stay at Planters's Hotel and contribute this way to the renovation of the building.

Location was great. Walking distance to town but far enough away to be quiet from the busy streets of downtown. (15 min walk) The dining balcony was nice to have breakfast and an evening drink from. Fantastic views from both our room balcony as well as the dining balcony. Lots of monkey entertainment to see from the balconies. Beautiful wood floors throughout the hotel and large sitting room at entrance with nice furniture to relax on although we didn't use.

No closet/wardrobe in our room. Bath towels were too small to wrap around a normal sized (5'7/173cm, 130lbs/59 kilos) woman. Our room had an a/c but only a sheet on the bed - no quilt, also no mattress pad under the sheet of the bed. Very little lighting especially in bathroom. VERY basic accommodations.

The hosts were very friendly and extremely helpful. They actually lent us money as we arrived on a holiday weekend and couldnt change any money - truely amazing! The rooms are basic but clean and we stepped out of our room onto a beautiful deck with a fantastic view overlooking the mountains. It was lovely sitting there for meals and an afternoon pot of tea - a great way to unwind after a days sightseeing. Staff all great like anywhere in Sri Lanka. Also walking distance to lake and town centre

Would be great if their budget could manage new towels. They are clean but very worn.

Friendly staff, location, spacious nice rooms.

Wifi is not working, electricity is unstable, staff could help u to hire a cab or tuktuk but with high prices.

The very warm welcome and helpfulness of the staff without being overbearing - large, comfortable rooms although the bathrooms could do with upgrading. The food was excellent and the service and ambience in the hotel overall very good indeed.

The bathrooms were a little outdated but the shower worked perfectly and there was plenty of hot water.

It was all fine. No wifi in rooms. But everything was clean and nice. Good value for money

Real planter's house with wooden stairs, ancient furniture, lots of collonial times' artifacts. Very quiet place - it's incredibly important for crazy Kandy. Fantastic delight of drinking tea with milk on the open terrace. Very kind and helpful staff. Wild monkey came to our bathroom :). Definitely recommend!

Like maybe all other hotels in Sri-Lanka - quite basic comfort. But in comparison with other hotels this hotel is really worth for money.

It is like a Boutigue hotel with very tasteful decor. The owner is new to the game so not much variety in meals and drinks. Each morning breakfast is served on the verhanda and it is the same fruit platter, toast, omlette, fruit juice and tea or coffee.they do serve lunch, dinner and snacks on request. Kandy town is about 15min walk along the lake, or take a tuk tuk or bus.We had a lovely big room, could fit 25 people in it but I believe they have smaller rooms as well and rooms with balconies. We loved the 3 days we spent here.

We did not have a tv in the room and the Olympics were on. They are slowly fitting out each room. Also no fridge.

Owner is absolutely marvelous, The hotel has only been opened for less than a year and they are really putting an effort into making something of an old classic hotel. Very friendly and very helpful staff. We felt very confortable and at home at the Hotel. Although the accomodations are simple and they do not have much in the way of extra things at the hotel such as a pool etc, what is there is very nice and we felt the hotel represents very good value.

There are a couple of ongoing issues throughout Sri Lanka altough the worst was in Kandy. The first problem is that the cab (tuk tuk) drivers are constantly trying to rip you off, we found that the manager was constantly trying to recommend certain people for taxis and bus services who we felt were not being honest. This was in stark contrast to Unawatuna where the tuk tuk drivers were very good. The second issue is all prices are quoted in us$ and again the manager tried to inflate the amount of the bill with a conversion rate inconsistant with the bank. We wired money directly into the account of the owner for the exact amount of us$, all amounts were converted directly by the bank and the manager tried to say that there was more owing in Rupees.

The staff at the hotel were excellent. Location is good for Kandy Lake and the Temple of the Tooth which can be reached within 5 minutes by Tuk-Tuk.

No Fridge or Safe in the room.

    The staffs were very helpful.

Water pressure wasn't that great when taking a shower. Other than that, it's not too bad for the price we paid.

Despite being a little distance from the Kandy lake, it proved an excellent choice, we could get into the heart of Kandy for under R200 by tuktuk. Having booked only minutes before turning up, the staff reacted really quickly and we were welcomed with cool drinks. The rooms are a little basic but perfect for a simple stay with a colonial feel. The hotel was clean and well maintained. Overall for the price, we were really delighted with Planter's. Of note, having booked 2 nights, we decided to start touring early and only stayed one night, the hotel were most helpful and very kindly refunded the second night without a problem. We would definitely recommend this hotel to others who are after a colonial feel, without paying big bucks.
